A gentle touch and controlled contact on the first vertebrae in the neck is a little-known chiropractic procedure that corrects the position of the top vertebra of the spine, the atlas. NUCCA adjusting is designed to restore balance to the spine. Even though the primary focus is the neck, the effects of the correction influence the whole spine and all body systems. This is because the NUCCA procedure influences one of the highest control centers over body balance, the brain stem and central nervous system.

The C-1 vertebra, also known as the Atlas, is a small donut-like bone located at the top of the spine and the base of the skull that surrounds the brain stem. Trillions of nerve fibers from the brainstem travel through the small opening in atlas and flow down into the spinal column. When the spine is subjected to stress it can become misaligned. This phenomenon is known as the Atlas Subluxation Complex Syndrome (ASC) or the ASC Syndrome.

Subluxation (Misalignment in Head and Neck)

All living organisms are able to detect changes within themselves and in their environments. Changes in the external environment include those of light, temperature, sound, motion and odor. Changes in the internal environment include those in the position of the head and limbs as well as in the internal organs. Once detected, these internal and external changes must be analyzed and acted upon in order to preserve the integrity, well-being, and status quo of the organism. The nervous system is based upon the almost instantaneous transmission of impulses from one region of the body to another along specialized nerve cells.
In the centralized system of the human body, a portion of the nervous system has a dominant role in coordinating information and directing responses. This centralization consists of the brain and spinal cord. Impulses are carried to and from the brain and spinal cord by nerve fibers that make up the peripheral nervous system.

The nerves in our spinal column are very sensitive to pressure and stress. When the spine becomes misaligned sufficiently it stresses the nerves, compromises their normal impulses, and changes function throughout the body.

Nerves are responsible for four primary functions:
  1. Control and regulate all vital functions including circulation, breathing and digestion.
  2. Activate muscles allowing us to move.
  3. Allow us to sense, perceive and feel.
  4. Relate us to the world outside ourselves including learning, experiencing and behavior.
When the atlas and/or axis are out of their proper position, the head, which can weigh as much as 14 lbs, moves off center of the body. This creates body imbalance from head to toe. More weight shifts to one side of the body than another. If these vertebrae are also rotated out of position, they can twist your entire spinal structure, including the pelvis, so that one leg becomes shorter than another.

How to get this condition?

Accidents that tear loose ligaments that hold the spinal bones together create a weakness for the spine to misalign. Because of the close relationship between the spine and the nervous system, good spinal balance is critical for good health.
With injury or stress, the muscles in the back will tighten and the pelvis will also shift in order to be as closely aligned with the head as possible. The body and spine become distorted and locked into a stressed posture.

The result of an atlas and/or axis being out of position is the restriction or distortion of critical messages from the brain to all parts of the body. Every cell, organ or tissue that is not receiving adequate nerve energy and communication from the brain will suffer and degenerate.

Take a rubber band and wrap it tightly around your index finger at the base of the finger where it is attached to your hand. Wait a few minutes. Your entire finger begins to turn white and blue due to the circulation being cut off by the rubber band. You can massage your finger to restore circulation. You can inject a syringe with pain medication to stop the pain. However, only the symptoms of the problem have been addressed, not the cause. The rubber band is the cause.

The same thing is true for an atlas that has moved out of its proper position. It can constrict or distort proper nerve flow from the brain to organs and limbs throughout the body. Your feet may hurt or you may be having kidney problems, but the cause of the problem may not be in those areas at all, but in your neck where a misaligned atlas is restricting or distorting proper nerve flow to areas throughout the body. If your atlas remains out of position for years, degeneration of organ, muscle and cell tissue results. Over time, that could be serious, since in many conditions, pain is the last symptom to occur to indicate a problem exists.

The doctor will calculate the exact position the entire spine has tilted, shifted, or rotated from its normal anatomical position.

The slightest degree of displacement of the spine from its normal position can cause body imbalance and brain stem compression-resulting in increased health problems felt throughout the entire body.

By utilizing a formula calculated from physics and mechanics of x-ray, the doctor is able to make the NUCCA Correction.

The doctor then applies a slight pre-determined pressure just below the ear at the atlas vertebrae (first neck vertebrae) to gently re-position the head over the center of the neck. This re-positioning is what restores body balance and removes brain stem compression.

The NUCCA Correction requires NO FORCEFUL TWISTING, POPPING, OR CRACKING, and is barely felt by the patient.

By correcting the spine with this specificity the entire nervous system begins to function differently. This happens because it no longer has the stress of the entire spinal column at its grasp. It is this balanced unstressed position that allows the body to stabilize and begin a process of recovery (healing). It is the long-term stability of the NUCCA Correction that reverses the progressive degenerative effects that body imbalance and brain stem compression has on the entire body.

Restore Normal Function in our body

The procedure cures nothing. It simply restores body balance and brain-to-body communication so that organs, limbs and tissues can resume normal functioning. The body can now self-heal. That is why we see many different conditions responding to the same procedure.

However, too many of us wait too long to get our atlases corrected. This is mainly due to ignorance of the vital role the atlas plays in the health of the entire body throughout life. It is becoming increasingly clear that parents should have their children's atlas' examined as soon as possible and have periodic atlas check ups throughout their lives. Countless problems could be avoided entirely. A rightly positioned atlas is so fundamental to good health, children to grandparents need to get their atlases examined now.
